The Profit and loss / Other comprehensive income template is where you analyse the profit and loss account (and OCI) for tax. For each account you decide whether to analyse it, choose a tax treatment and — where relevant — pick the iXBRL tag and send the account for more detailed analysis. This analysis is the foundation of the trading, property and investment income calculations.

When should I use this template?
Use it after selecting a business type in Return information and before finalising the income and adjustment templates. The tax treatments applied here determine the adjustments to profit that flow into the rest of the computation.
Before you start
A business type must be selected in the Business type section of the Return information template. If none is selected, the template shows a warning with a link back to Return information and cannot be completed. Where more than one business type is selected, the template runs in hybrid mode and shows a value and tax treatment per business type.
How do I work through the accounts?
Each account appears as a row. The controls on each row are:
- Analyse? — a checkbox (shown in the input view). Tick it to analyse the account for tax. You can leave accounts you do not need to adjust unanalysed.
- Tax treatment — a required dropdown that tells Silverfin how to treat the account, for example allowable/taxable, disallowable/non-taxable, or a treatment that routes the amount to a dedicated schedule (depreciation, impairment, revaluation, capital items expensed, loan relationships, dividend income, qualifying charitable donations, and so on). In hybrid mode you choose a treatment per business type.
- iXBRL tag — where the treatment is disallowable (or allowable management expenses for an investment business), a further dropdown appears in the input view so you can pick the iXBRL tag. These tag selections do not appear on the printed or submitted document.
- Additional analysis required — a checkbox that pushes the account to the P&L / OCI – Additional analysis schedule when a single account-level treatment is not enough (for example, the account needs splitting across several treatments or tagged items). If you enable the account-level Tax analysis table inside the account template and enter data there, tick this box so the analysis flows through.
How do I split depreciation, impairment and revaluation into separate treatments?
At the bottom of the template there is a checkbox: "Enable individual Tax treatment options for depreciation, tangible impairment, and tangible revaluation." Tick it to split the single combined "depreciation / impairment / revaluation" treatment into three separate treatments:
- Depreciation
- Impairment – Tangible
- Revaluation – Tangible
Enable this if you intend to use the Property revaluations template in the tax disclosures section, so revaluation movements can be analysed separately. For accounting periods starting on or after 1 April 2025 these split treatments are available automatically. Once enabled, the same split treatments also appear in the Additional analysis and in the fixed asset and tax computation summaries.
What flows through to the rest of Corporation Tax?
The tax treatments applied here produce the adjustments to profit that feed the trading income, property income and investment business (management expenses) calculations, and they populate the dedicated schedules (capital allowances, loan relationships, charitable donations, and so on). Because most schedules reconcile back to the amounts analysed here, this template keeps the whole computation tied to the accounts. The combined depreciation / impairment / revaluation total is still provided for templates that need it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the template telling me no business type is selected?
A business type must be chosen in Return information first. Follow the link in the warning to select one.
What does the "Analyse?" checkbox do?
It marks whether an account is analysed for tax. Untick it for accounts that need no adjustment.
How do I split one account across several tax treatments or add iXBRL tags?
Tick Additional analysis required on the account to send it to the Additional analysis schedule, where you can enter multiple treatments and tagged items.
Why do I see separate columns or tables per business type?
Because more than one business type has been selected, so the analysis is shown per business type to allocate amounts correctly.
How do I get the separate Depreciation / Impairment / Revaluation treatments?
Tick Enable individual Tax treatment options… at the bottom of the template (automatic for periods starting on or after 1 April 2025). This is needed for the Property revaluations template.
Why does a dedicated schedule show an unreconciled difference?
Dedicated schedules reconcile to the amounts analysed here, so a difference means the schedule and this analysis do not agree — check the tax treatment applied to the relevant account.
