The Summary of Intangible Assets template takes everything recorded in the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register and presents it as a single cost, amortisation and net book value movement table, category by category, in the layout used for the accounts note. There is nothing to enter here. It is a read-only rollup, so once the Register is complete and reconciled, this template is effectively done too.

When should I use this template?
Add it alongside the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register whenever a company has intangible fixed assets. It saves you compiling the note disclosure by hand from the Register's category totals, because the movement table is built for you, ready to reference or copy into the note.
Before you start
- Make sure the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register is added to the same period and populated for the categories you need summarised. This template has nothing to show until the Register does.
- There is no configuration or data entry needed on this template itself before you start, beyond having the Register in place.
Steps
- Add the template to the period once the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register is in place.
- Check the net book value shown for each category against the accounts. If a warning appears at the top of the template, it means the Register's net book value does not currently agree with the trial balance. Go back to the Register to resolve it, since that is where the reconciliation actually happens.
- Review the cost, amortisation and net book value movement for each category. These figures are pulled directly from the Register, so there is nothing to overtype here.
- If any intangible assets were financed under a hire purchase agreement, a tickbox lets you reveal a matching hire purchase summary table. It only appears if the Register has hire purchase balances to show.
What flows through to the rest of the accounts/workflow?
This template does not feed anything onward itself. It is a presentation layer that sits between the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register and the intangible fixed assets note, making the Register's category totals easy to read and reference. The note itself draws its figures directly from the Register, not from this summary.
What rolls forward next year?
Nothing needs to roll forward on this template specifically, since it has no data entry of its own. Everything it shows is recalculated fresh each period from whatever is held in the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register.
Where the data comes from
Every figure on this template comes from the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register for the same period: cost, additions, disposals, amortisation, net book value and any hire purchase balances. If a figure looks wrong here, correct it in the Register rather than on this template.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't I enter or edit anything on this template?
This is by design, as it is a summary rather than a working paper. All entries and corrections happen in the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register; this template simply reflects the result.
Why does a warning appear at the top of the template?
It means the net book value calculated in the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register does not currently agree with the trial balance. Resolve the difference in the Register, and the warning will clear here automatically.
Do I have to add this template at all?
It is not compulsory, but it is recommended. Without it, you would need to add up the Register's category totals by hand to build the note-format cost, amortisation and net book value table. This template does that for you.
How does this relate to the Intangible Fixed Assets (reconciled through IFAR) account template?
They draw on the same underlying data from the Intangibles Fixed Asset Register but serve different purposes. The account template sits on the balance sheet accounts themselves and shows the reconciled net book value per account, while this template presents the full year's cost and amortisation movement across all categories for the note.
