There are three types of users:

  • Staff contributors (can be given admin access)
  • External contributors
  • Pulse users

An admin user can switch a user's access in the following scenario's:

  • From staff contributor to Pulse user
  • From Pulse user to staff contributor (if they were created as a staff user)
  • From external contributor to Pulse user
  • From Pulse user to external contributor (if they were created as an external user)

It is not possible to turn a staff user into an external user and vice versa. If you need this changed for a user, please contact support@silverfin.com and mention the email address of the affected user.

1. From staff contributor to Pulse user

At firm level, a staff contributor can have both staff access (internal access) to some files, and Pulse access (external access) to other files. Any admin user can edit this:

This can either be edited at firm-level, as in this screenshot, or at file level.

In the file you need to go to the 'users' page, and click on the 'edit' button next to the user you would like to change:

Then you get the following pop-up, where you can edit the user's access:

2. From Pulse user to staff contributor (if they were created as a staff user)

Switching a Pulse user to a staff contributor is only possible if they were created as a staff user to begin with. You can recognise staff Pulse users by the tag 'limited access' in the users list:

You can edit the Pulse users at firm level, and at file level, in the same way described above. In the users' page of a file you will not be able to tell who was created as a staff user and who was created as an external user:

You will need to click the 'edit' button next to the user to see to which type of user you can edit them:

3. From external contributor to Pulse user

Changing an external contributor to a Pulse user can be done in much the same way as described above under section 1.

At firm-level you can find the external contributors in the users list under the tab 'external'. They are indicated with the tag 'contributor':

In a file you can find them in the users page under the section 'External contributors'.

Please note that external contributors have access to the entire file, except the internal communication, and that this is a billable service. Please contact your Customer Success Manager if you have any questions about pricing and billing.

4. From Pulse user to external contributor (if they were created as an external user)

As described in section two, you can only change a Pulse user into an external contributor if they were created as an external user. This can happen in two ways:

You can create the Pulse user in the file via the button 'add Pulse user':

This will automatically be an external user.

Secondly you can also create Pulse users at firm level. This is where you can decide if you want the Pulse user to be a staff user or an external user, by choosing whether you create them in the 'Staff'-tab or in the 'External'-tab:

Only the Pulse users listed in the 'External-tab can be converted into external contributors, but this cannot be done at firm level. Changing a Pulse-user to an external contributor can only be done in the file itself.

To do this you need to go to the users-page in the file, click on 'edit' next to the Pulse user you want to edit, and switch their role to external contributor:

This is an action that can only be performed by an admin user. If you do not have these rights, contact an admin users within your firm.
