This article explains why Silverfin requires two-factor authentication (2FA) and guides you through the setup process. 2FA enhances security by requiring a code from an Authenticator app along with your password. Learn how to install and use an Authenticator app, troubleshoot issues, and understand the importance of this security measure.

Why do I have to sign in with Two-Factor Authentication?

When you log into Silverfin and see a two-factor authentication screen, it means your office has decided to enhance security by enabling two-factor authentication (2FA). Two-factor authentication (2FA) requires you to enter a code from an "Authenticator" app in addition to your password. This extra step, which can be performed once every 30 days on trusted devices, greatly enhances security.

What is an Authenticator?

An Authenticator app generates a new temporary code every 30 seconds. You’ll need to enter this code along with your password to access your account. This code changes frequently, making it difficult for unauthorised users to gain access.

Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

  1. Log in to Silverfin: After logging into Silverfin and seeing the two-factor authentication screen, click the green 'Continue to setup button'.
  2. Install an Authenticator App: If you don't have an Authenticator app installed, you'll need to get one. Here are some recommended options:
    • Google Authenticator for iOS or Android (mobile app)
    • Authy for iOS, Android (mobile app)
    • WinAuth (desktop app)
    • Microsoft Authenticator for iOS or Android (mobile app)
    • Password Manager (Note: Authenticators in password managers may not be free, but they can be used on multiple devices and shared among users)
  3. Scan the QR Code: Open your Authenticator app and scan the QR code displayed on the Silverfin screen.
  4. Enter the access code: Once Silverfin is added to your Authenticator app, it will generate a code. Enter this code on the Silverfin screen.
  5. Trust your device (optional):  If you’re using a trusted computer, select 'Trust this browser for the next 30 days' to avoid entering a code each time you log in on this device.
  6. Complete the setup: Press Continue to finish setting up two-step verification.

Troubleshooting Two-Factor Authentication

Can I disable Two-Factor Authentication?

Two-factor authentication (2FA) must be disabled by an admin user at the office level. It cannot be disabled for individual users if it is enabled for the office.

I lost my Smartphone with Authenticator app. What should I do?

If you lose your smartphone with the Authenticator app, contact your office's admin user. They can reset 2FA for you. You will receive a new QR code to set up 2FA again. Before scanning the new QR code, delete the old Silverfin account from your Authenticator app.

I encounter errors when using 2FA. What should I do?

If you encounter errors while using 2FA, contact your office's admin user. They can reset 2FA for you. You will receive a new QR code to set up 2FA again. Before scanning the new QR code, delete the old Silverfin account from your Authenticator app.
