The Investments summary pulls together every Investments register instance in the file into a single schedule, split by category, and reconciles the combined net book value to the selected investment accounts. It is the note-ready counterpart to the Investments register, in the same way the Summary of fixed assets sits above the Fixed asset register.

When should I use this template?
Add this template once per file whenever the client holds investments, alongside one or more Investments register instances. It only picks up figures from accounts where the Investments register account template has actually been assigned, so it must be used together with the register, never on its own.
Before you start
- Assign the Investments register account template to every nominal code holding investments first. This template will not show any figures for codes that do not have it.
- Have the trial balance investment codes to hand so you can select them using the account selector.
Background
This is a generalised working paper for summarising investment holdings at cost or valuation. There is no standards-specific treatment built into it beyond the categories a preparer would normally use for grouping investments: subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates, listed investments and other investments.
Steps
- Use the account selector at the top of the template to pull in the nominal code or codes that hold investments. Codes already picked up from typical investment account ranges are pre-selected as a starting point, so review and adjust them as needed for the client.
- The template then loops through every account you have selected and, for any account using the Investments register template, adds up the underlying investment detail (brought-forward cost, additions, disposals, revaluations and impairment) by category: Investments in subsidiaries, Investments in joint ventures / associates, Listed investments, and Other investments.
- Review the resulting table: brought-forward cost or revaluation, additions, disposals, revaluations, closing cost or revaluation, impairment provision and closing net book value, each by category and in total.
- Check the reconciliation row. The closing net book value total is compared to the trial balance value of the accounts you selected, with a green dot when they agree and a red dot with the difference when they do not. If any selected account is not using the Investments register template, its balance will not be picked up in the category columns even though it is included in the trial balance total. That is usually the cause of an unexpected difference here.
- Where a prior period exists, review the brought-forward net book value row for each category and confirm it agrees with last year's closing figures.
- Add any overall comments or supporting attachments at the bottom of the template.
What flows through to the rest of the accounts/workflow?
This is the template to use when completing the investments note in the financial statements. It gives the category breakdown (subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates, listed, other) and the full cost or valuation movement schedule for the year in one place, sourced from every Investments register in the file.
What rolls forward next year?
The closing net book value for each category (subsidiaries, joint ventures and associates, listed, other) rolls forward automatically as next year's brought-forward net book value, shown for comparison once a prior period exists. The account selection itself also carries forward, so the same investment codes are picked up automatically in the following period unless you change them.
Where the data comes from
All figures are calculated automatically from the Investments register instances assigned to the accounts you select. There is no separate data entry on this template beyond choosing the accounts and, optionally, adding overall notes or attachments.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't my investments account show up in the category totals even though it's selected?
The account needs the Investments register template assigned to it. This summary only reads investment detail from accounts using that template.
Can I use this without the Investments register?
No. This template is a roll-up. Without at least one Investments register instance feeding it, the category columns will be blank even if you have selected investment accounts.
What if a client holds more than one type of investment in the same nominal code?
Assign the Investments register to that code and record each holding with its own Category on the register. The summary will still group each holding correctly across the four categories, regardless of how many nominal codes are involved.
