If you’ve updated an account name in your bookkeeping system but don’t see the change in Silverfin, this article will help you understand why and what steps to take to fix it.

Why the change isn’t automatically reflected in Silverfin
- Account name changes in the bookkeeping system are only synced to Silverfin when there is a value change on that account.
- If no transactions have been made after the name change, the update won’t automatically sync.
How to trigger the change of the account name
To ensure the updated account name is picked up by Silverfin, follow these steps:
Method 1
- Create a booking: make a random booking of just 0.01 in the bookkeeping system for the account with the updated name.
- Trigger the synchronisation: in Silverfin, click on the arrows to trigger the synchronisation. The new account name(s) should then be reflected in Silverfin.

- Once the account names have changed, you will see a notification.

Method 2
When a large number of accounts require an account name update, and using method 1 would be time-consuming, we advise the following alternative way to update the account names:
- Export the Trial Balance (TB) directly from your bookkeeping software, ensuring that this export reflects the newly updated account names.
- Upload the exported TB file manually into Silverfin. You can find more info on how to do so here.
- Once the accounts have successfully updated in Silverfin, you can reconnect your file to the synchronisation to resume normal operations.
You cannot manually edit the original account name in Silverfin. It must be updated in your bookkeeping software for the original account name to change.
In Octopus, account names can be edited per book year. If your bookkeeping system works the same way, make sure you adjust the most recent period, otherwise the change will not update in Silverfin.
